Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
I am Seth Cornman, born and raised in Big Spring to loving parents who never gave up on my education. I have two siblings who now have children of their own in Big Spring.
School was tough for me as I do have a learning disability. If it were not for one special teacher and my parents working together, I would have just given up on school. Now, because of them, I am a college graduate with a degree in computer forensics. This is despite Big Spring staff members telling me I could not, or would not make it to college.
I have seen the damage a poor support staff can do, and also the immense good parental and school support can bring. I want every student and family to have that positive support. No student should ever be told what they can’t achieve.
I crossed the gap in education. I was taught in the old facilities without electronic devices or computers. I was also part of the very first class in the new High School, who experienced the amazing capabilities of technology in the classroom. I observed what great pride was taken in our excellent buildings and grounds, but that came at a cost to the students. In recent years, more has been invested in buildings and property excellence than in academic proficiency. This must change if our students are going to succeed in the work force.
I worked closely with the district administration during college, as I was hired to be IT Support for the school. In doing so, I learned a lot about the operations of Big Spring. This information will be of tremendous value when dealing with the current and future administration of Big Spring School District.
I have traveled the world and have seen both success and failure in education. I’ve witnessed schools ranging from grand facilities to dirt shacks. It’s not the buildings that make the difference, it’s the curriculum and the people. The top schools have a combination of good teachers, committed parents, and great students. I am running for school director / school board to bring everything back to the students and parents, to give them the best Big Spring can offer in education.
