Policy 235

Student Rights/Surveys policy lays out the rules the district must follow when giving out surveys of a particular type. Parents were heard clearly they are tired of the school giving surveys to their children with out approval from the parents. The district with the old Survey policy was allowed to do passive permission ( if you did not send in a written NO the district determined it to mean YES) but only if the surveys were volunteer . So if you never saw the letter sent home with the student or were to busy with work and the kids and missed the letter your kid would be subject to information or events you might not agree with. There will now be a greater requirement on communication and the level of communication.

Surveys that are effected by this new 235 policy are…..

Any Survey that includes topics of

  • 1.Political affiliations or beliefs of student or parent/guardian.
  • 2. Mental and psychological problems of the student or family.
  • 3. Sexual behavior or attitudes.
  • 4. Illegal, antisocial, self-incriminating or demeaning behavior.
  • 5. Critical appraisals of other individuals with whom respondents have close family relationships.
  • 6. Legally recognized privileged or an analogous relationships, such as those with lawyers, physicians, and ministers.
  • 7. Religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs of the student or parent/guardian.
  • 8. Income, other than that required by law to determine eligibility for participation in a program or for receiving financial assistance under such program.

Changes from the old 235 policy…

  • Removed the volunteer requirement since it was being abused.
  • Accurate detailed communication including notification of any of the 8 above topics are present
  • Better communications to the student
  • Better definition as to what is allowed under the collection of information section.
